Our brief was to design a modern house that would be sympathetic to its context and works within the massing and scale of an existing planning consent. The client wanted the building to reflect modern living requirements and use natural daylight and ventilation combined with passive heating and cooling techniques through mechanical heat recovery and high level photo voltaic panels integrated into the slate roof. The design has been developed to achieve Code for Sustainable Homes level 4.
The building has been design as two interlocking elements with differing roof pitches that respond to the north and south aspects. The southern roof has been designed on a stepper pitch to provide an appropriate location for Photovoltaic panels. The northern roof is at a much shallower pitch to create a suitable shaded location for a sedum roof that will add further ecological value to the scheme.
To the rear of the property the main living areas open directly to the garden through glazed sliding panels. Due to the buildings orientation, solar shading has been incorporated to control solar gains, plus provide areas of shelter during sunny days. v2
