The site is located within the local Green Belt, a Conservation Area, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and an Area of Great Landscape Value.
Due to significant changes in level across the site the land was re-profiled in order to maximise the views from the main living spaces but also to provide easy vehicle access to the site. The living room and kitchen / diner space both open out onto first floor terraces which are angle to face the stunning views across the Surrey Hills.
The projecting study at second floor level provides views of the kitchen and dining area as well as elevated views across the landscape. In order to maximise natural daylight into the rear of these rooms a curved structural glass spine ridge was developed which allows the sun to backlight the rear walls to these main spaces. At night the ridge is lit creating a stunning feature along the length of the house. The lower level accommodates the five bedrooms. Three en-suite bedrooms are located on the western side each with reading bay windows facing the views. The master suite with dressing and en-suite is to the east, with guest accommodation behind. This floor also includes a large cinema room and family games room.
The house has been voted Winner of the Guildford Borough Council Design Awards for 2011-2013 by a panel of regional Architects and Landscape Architects and is also a winner of the RIBA South / South East Architecture Awards 2014.
Working with Levanter Developments, planning has been achieved under Delegated powers for this residential scheme of 14 contemporary apartments on Farnham Road in the centre of Guildford.
The planning application for Cavendish House, with developer Igloo Developments, has now been granted planning approval. The project incorporates 14 nos 2 bedroom apartments to a high level of specification. Construction is due to start on site during April 2015.
